Johnny Depp will play the Mad Hatter in the new Alice in Wonderland movie directed by Tim Burton. Is this a surprise to anyone? Johnny Depp is chosen pretty much like a knee jerk reflex whenever a director wants to portray a character who is fucked up beyond belief...Edward Scissor Hands, Jack Sparrow, Cry Baby, etc. He is so in tune with characters who have borderline personality disorders that when he plays someone who is normal it just doesn't register with anyone. In fact, can you even remember the last movie he was in that didn't require him to wear makeup and/or walk like a foppish dandy? I can vaguely remember commercials for some movie where his daughter gets kidnapped and he has to rescue her. I think it ended by cutting to a black screen 40 minutes into it with the words "who gives a shit" written in helvetica font.
